Art Blakey

Drums

Meet the artist

As leader of the Jazz Messengers, the drummer discovered and mentored young musicians for nearly half a century. The band became a school of hard bop in its own right. His drums do more than mark time: they answer soloists and raise the temperature of the band.

The Jazz Messengers combine bebop's sharp improvisation with the accessibility of blues and gospel. Memorable themes give way to individual voices, while strong swing connects successive generations of players. Following the musicians who passed through the group opens many routes into the later history of jazz.

Where to start listening

Listen for the memorable themes and the drums driving the band forward. Following what happens behind the horn solos can be just as rewarding.
