Aziza Mustafazadeh

Piano / Vocals

Meet the artist

Vagif Mustafazadeh’s daughter. She inherits the style of Jazz-Mugham established by her father and develops it into her own unique improvisational style as a pianist and vocalist. Melodic sensibilities associated with Azerbaijani mugham meet piano harmony and improvisation.

Long singing phrases emerge among sharp rhythms and fine ornamentation. Voice works alongside the keyboard as another instrumental color. Different partners and ensembles allow her to develop an individual expression within an inherited tradition. Following melodic contours and rhythmic changes offers an entry into that encounter without requiring prior knowledge of mugham.

Where to start listening

Follow the piano's repeated patterns and the melodies that grow from them. Sensing the smaller rhythmic movements makes unexpected turns in the phrases easier to enjoy.
