Dizzy Gillespie

Trumpet

Meet the artist

A trumpet player who, along with Charlie Parker, pioneered the bebop style of jazz. He sought out his own connection with Cuban music, and played a leading role in the development of Afro-Cuban Jazz. Brilliant high notes and rhythmic agility bring complex bebop lines to life.

His collaboration with Cuban percussionist Chano Pozo also explored new rhythmic combinations. Horn melodies and repeating percussion patterns gave improvisation a renewed connection to dance. Humor and a strong musical personality keep the complexity inviting. His work embodies the exchange through which American and Caribbean musical traditions expanded one another's possibilities.

Where to start listening

Start with both the trumpet's quick phrases and the rhythms that invite movement. Learn the main melody, then shift your attention to the repeating figures behind it.
