Enrico Rava
Meet the artist
A leading Italian trumpeter whose lyrical approach to melody meets the language of European free improvisation. A rounded tone sings spacious melodies while remaining open to unpredictable improvisation.
Intimacy never becomes stasis: the music keeps moving even in quiet passages. European improvisational freedom meets a strong feeling for song. Responses to surrounding sounds gradually alter the atmosphere, rewarding attention to the whole band. Experiment and lyrical beauty belong to one flexible musical imagination rather than separate modes.
Where to start listening
Begin by hearing the trumpet melody as a song. The contrast between held notes and brief replies reveals the ensemble's shared breathing.
