Esbjörn Svensson

Piano

Meet the artist

As leader of the trio e.s.t., Svensson combined the sonic power of rock with jazz improvisation, bringing Nordic jazz to a new generation. He approached piano, bass and drums as a band creating one shared sound.

Repeated riffs, gradual increases in intensity and electronic treatments bring new tensions to jazz conversation. Accessible melodies can lead toward silence or powerful climaxes. The result speaks to listeners familiar with rock and electronic music as well as jazz, with e.s.t.'s identity emerging from the balance between unity and improvisational movement.

Where to start listening

Listen to the piano trio as a unified band. Follow the moments when repeating rhythms and melodies begin to change.
