Rabih Abou-Khalil

Oud

Meet the artist

A jazz musician and composer who migrated to Germany during the Lebanese civil war. He combines the scales of Arab music with jazz improvisation, incorporating a touch of humor into his compositions. Winds, bass and percussion respond to the oud's ornamented lines.

Complex meters retain songfulness and humor, making the music accessible without theoretical knowledge. Rather than placing Arabic melody over a standard jazz accompaniment, he builds ensembles around distinct instrumental personalities. Short themes change shape through chamber-like precision and improvisational freedom. Working across cultures becomes a creative perspective in its own right.

Where to start listening

Start with the oud, then shift toward winds and percussion. Listening without assigning a fixed lead role reveals the pleasure of instruments exchanging functions.
