Tony Williams
Meet the artist
At the age of 17, he joined Miles Davis’ Second Golden Quintet. He was a precocious drummer. Later, he formed the Lifetime band, and also played a role in the emergence of fusion music. Different parts of the drum kit move independently while propelling the whole band.
Shifting and destabilizing the pulse invites new responses from partners. Subtle acoustic conversation and Lifetime's electric force share a challenging imagination. Fine accents remain audible within the power, creating tension beyond volume alone. His playing makes drums a force that determines musical direction rather than merely accompanying it.
Where to start listening
Listen separately to the cymbals and drum strokes. Across these different bands, rhythm becomes a force that actively shapes the music.
