Airto Moreira

Percussion

Meet the artist

A percussionist who participated in Miles Davis’s band and the group Return to Forever, bringing the diverse Brazilian percussions into jazz fusion music. He is the husband of Flora Purim. Drums, metal, wood and voice create atmosphere as well as rhythm.

Sounds may reinforce a pulse or suggest a different direction for improvisation. Brazilian musical roots met electric jazz in a search for new colors. Work with Flora Purim gives voice and percussion a particularly lively relationship. Listening beneath the foreground reveals how small sounds can change the warmth and depth of an ensemble.

Where to start listening

Pick out small percussive sounds and shifting resonances to hear the layers of rhythm. Listening behind the main melody can change your sense of the whole piece.
