Miho Hazama

Composition

Meet the artist

A Japanese composer, arranger and conductor exploring contemporary large-ensemble jazz through her own m_unit and work with the Danish Radio Big Band. Instrumental ranges and textures form interweaving melodic layers.

Her m_unit includes strings, opening colors beyond the conventional big band. Carefully written sections lead into solos without breaking the larger narrative. Intricate rhythm and harmony arrive as vivid sound rather than abstract complexity. Composition and conducting draw out individual players, demonstrating jazz's capacity for designing collective forms as well as improvising within them.

Where to start listening

You need not identify every instrument: follow a melody passed from lower to higher voices. The movement between solo and ensemble reveals the pleasure of arranging.
