Ryo Fukui
Meet the artist
A jazz pianist based in Sapporo whose recordings, including Scenery, have reached listeners across generations and national borders. Working especially in piano trios, he brings a direct touch to standards and blues feeling.
Warm lyricism can turn into strong rhythmic drive as a performance gathers heat. Individuality comes from playing familiar music in his own breath rather than proclaiming a new movement. Recordings carried this Sapporo-rooted practice across borders, illustrating how lasting jazz can emerge from local scenes as well as major international centers.
Where to start listening
Follow the piano melody first, then listen to the weight and resonance of individual notes. Different settings let you hear the same musical voice from another distance.
