Chucho Valdés

Piano

Meet the artist

In 1973, he formed the band Irakere. He was a pianist who combined Cuban folk rhythms with sophisticated jazz harmonies. He was a key figure in the second generation of Latin jazz musicians. Dynamic playing across the keyboard carries the interlocking movement of Cuban rhythms.

Intricate harmonies and rapid lines enter repeated patterns, generating tension and release. Written music and improvisation remain closely connected in large and small groups. Classical training and jazz exploration add depth beyond a simple Latin label. Exchanges between percussion and piano reveal traditions meeting through a shared rhythmic conversation.

Where to start listening

Follow each hand of the piano and then the percussion. Even in dense passages, short repeated figures can help you hear the ensemble's motion.
