Lionel Loueke

Guitar / Vocals

Meet the artist

A guitarist from West Africa, Benin. He combined his native Fon language pronunciation with his guitar playing techniques to create a unique style of playing. He also played in Herbie Hancock’s band for a long time. Percussive guitar rhythms and vocal lines form a single language.

Complex chords retain a natural sense of dance and speech. West African musical experience becomes an individual voice within contemporary jazz ensembles. Even small groups can suggest several interlocking rhythms, with strings and voice sometimes seeming inseparable. Rather than simply presenting a tradition, he transforms personal experience into new expression through ongoing cultural exchange.

Where to start listening

Start with the guitar's attack and the small rhythmic movements. Notice where voice and strings overlap and where they take different roles.
