カナダ・ケベックの鬼才鍵盤奏者マチュー・フィゼ新作
カナダ・ケベックシティを拠点とする鍵盤奏者/作曲家マチュー・フィゼ（Mathieu Fiset）の新譜『Des Marteaux & Des Cordes』。通常版のEPと、そこに2曲を加えたデラックス版がデジタル・リリースされているが、今回は8曲収録のデラックス版の方を紹介したい。
一言でいうと、ラテン・ジャズやフュージョン、プログレッシヴ・ロックといった要素が高度に融合した、鳥肌の立つようなかっこいい音楽だ。録音には過去作にも参加する世界的ドラマー、ラーネル・ルイス（Larnell Lewis）やアコースティック・ギターのアントワン・デュホール（Antoine Dufour）、ヴァイオリン/マンドリンのトミー・ゴティエ（Tommy Gauthier）といった凄腕たちが揃っており、各々の細かいプレイの隅々まで最高に楽しいセッションが繰り広げられる。
アルバム収録の楽曲は作編曲も演奏も、いずれも異次元のレベルの高さに驚かされる。
ヴァイオリンとピアノによる叙情的なイントロから郷愁を誘うラテン風のグルーヴに雪崩れ込む(3)「Rédemption」、スウェーデンの鍵盤奏者イェンス・ヨハンソン（Jens Johansson, イングヴェイ・マルムスティーンのバンドの初期メンバー）がゲスト参加しシンセを引き倒す(5)「Détour」、叙情的かつ情熱的、いわゆる“エモさ”の極みの(6)「Trilogie」など、いつまでも聴いていたくなるような音ばかりだ。
アルバムのラスト2曲はマチュー・フィゼによるソロピアノ。これはこれでとても素晴らしい曲と演奏だが、バンド編成での演奏も聴いてみたくなるような楽曲だ。
Mathieu Fiset 略歴
マチュー・フィゼは1989年カナダ・ケベックシティ生まれ。幼少期から音楽に触れて育ち、クラシックピアノを学んだ。10代の頃、いくつかの地元のバンドに参加し、オリジナルの楽曲を書いて演奏活動や録音を開始。カナダで数枚のアルバム・リリースとツアーを行った後、さらに活動の幅を広げ7年間にわたり中国、アラブ首長国連邦、東南アジアなど広範囲のツアーを行った。
2012年作『Robojazz』に収録されている曲「Chick’s Pain」はYouTubeを通してラーネル・ルイスのドラミングも含め話題となり、マチュー・フィゼの最初の大ヒットとなった。
アコースティック編成のジャズバンドや、前述のRoboJazzと呼ばれるシンセやエレクトリック楽器を多用したプログレ/フュージョン寄りの編成など幅広い領域を得意としており、これまでのアルバムはいずれも非常にクオリティが高い。

New album by Mathieu Fiset “Des Marteaux & Des Cordes”
“Des Marteaux & Des Cordes” is the new album by Quebec City, Canada-based keyboardist/composer Mathieu Fiset. The standard EP and a deluxe version with two additional tracks have been digitally released, and I would like to introduce the deluxe version, which contains eight tracks.
In a nutshell, what can I said about this album is that it is a highly sophisticated fusion of elements of Latin jazz, fusion, and progressive rock, and it is cool music that will give you goosebumps. The recordings were recorded by world-renowned drummer Larnell Lewis (also known play in Snarky Puppy), Antoine Dufour on acoustic guitar, and Tommy Gauthier on violin and mandolin. The session is a great fun, down to the smallest detail of each player’s performance.
The songs on the album, both in terms of composition and arrangement and performance, are all of an astonishingly high level of another dimension.
The lyrical introduction by violin and piano leads into an avalanche of nostalgic Latin-style grooves on (3) “Rédemption”.
Guest appearance by Swedish keyboardist Jens Johansson (an early member of Ingwie Malmsteen’s band) on the synth-driven (5) “Détour,” and the lyrical and passionate (6) “Trilogie” is the ultimate emotional sound.
The last two tracks on the album are solo piano by Mathieu Fizet. This is a very nice song and performance, but I would also like to hear it performed with a band.
Bio of Mathieu Fiset
Mathieu Fizet was born in 1989 in Quebec City, Canada.
He grew up exposed to music from an early age, studying classical piano, and as a teenager joined several local bands and began writing, performing, and recording original music. After several album releases and tours in Canada, he further expanded his activities and toured extensively in China, the United Arab Emirates, and Southeast Asia for seven years.
The song “Chick’s Pain” from the 2012 album “Robojazz“, became Mathieu Fizet’s first big hit after it was talked about via YouTube, including Larnell Lewis’ drumming.
He specializes in a wide range of styles, including acoustic jazz bands and the aforementioned RoboJazz, a progressive/fusion-leaning formation that makes heavy use of synths and electric instruments, and his previous albums have all been of very high quality.
