ジュリアナ・リニャレス擁するバンド Pietá、圧巻の表現力の3rd
ブラジルの男女3人組バンド、ピエタ（Pietá）の新作『Nasci no Brasil』は、実にブラジルらしい生命力が躍動する作品だ。”ブラジルに生まれた”とタイトルで力強く宣言する音楽作品で、彼らは近年のこの国を覆う逆進的で間違った愛国心ではなく、文化的な豊かさから来るブラジルの誇りを力強く歌う。
Pietá はリオデジャネイロ州連邦大学の演劇学部で知り合った3人によって2012年に結成された。メンバーは近年のソロ作『Nordeste Ficção』（2021年）も話題となった女性歌手ジュリアナ・リニャレス（Juliana Linhares）と、ギターやヴォーカルを担当する男性2人、フレッド・デマルカ（Fred Demarca）とハファエル・ロルガ（Rafael Lorga）。2015年に最初のアルバム『Leve o Que Quiser』をリリースし、ジュリアナ・リニャレスの美しく伸びやかなヴォーカルを中心とした素晴らしい表現力が絶賛された。
今作も全編にわたり、彼らが表現する世界観に強く魅入られる。サウンドは知的で非常に洗練されているが、湧き上がるアーティスティックな情熱はプリミティヴで野性的だ。
先住民族の知恵や文化を散りばめた詩と、ギターやパーカッション、フルートなどで作るリズムとハーモニーがブラジル音楽の“根幹”を示すオープニング・トラック(1)「Temquitê」にはペドロ・インヂオ・ネグロ（Pedro Indio Negro）がヴォーカルで参加。ジュリアナ・リニャレスとともに魂を曝け出すような圧巻の歌声を聴かせてくれる。
ジョアン・ボスコ（João Bosco）作曲、アルヂール・ブランキ（Aldir Blanc）作詞によるプロテスト・ソング(3)「O Ronco da Cuíca」のカヴァーは本作のハイライトのひとつ。これは彼らが結成当初からレパートリーにしているもので、抑圧し搾取するものたちへの怒りは歌詞のみならず、間奏部の強烈なサクソフォンのソロでも象徴的に表現されている。
(4)「Espanta Assombração」にはホベルタ・サー（Roberta Sá）が参加。過去の音楽遺産をもとに未来志向で作り上げたPietá流の新しいサンバだ。
ジョタ・ペー（Jota.pê）が参加する(6)「Perfume de Araçá」以降のアルバム後半は穏やかで内省的なサウンドへと変わってゆく。前半部が発散だとすれば、後半部はクールダウンといった様相で、(8)「Nasci no Brasil」の最終盤に特徴的に見られるようにブラジル北東部の伝統的な音楽への深いリスペクトを示している。

Brazilian band Pietá‘s new album, “Nasci no Brasil” is a vibrant work of life that is truly Brazilian. In a work of music that emphatically proclaims, “Born in Brazil” they powerfully sing of the Brazilian pride that comes from the country’s cultural richness, rather than the regressive and misguided patriotism that has overtaken the country in recent years.
Pietá was formed in 2012 by three people who met each other at the Theater Department of the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The members are Juliana Linhares, a female singer whose recent solo work “Nordeste Ficção” (2021) has also made a splash, and two men, Fred Demarca and Rafael Lorga, who play guitar and sing vocals. Their first album, Leve o Que Quiser, was released in 2015 to rave reviews for its wonderful expression, especially Juliana Linhares’ beautifully extended vocals.
The worldview they express throughout this album is strongly captivating. The sound is intelligent and very sophisticated, but the artistic passion that wells up is primitive and wild.
The opening track (1), “Temquitê,” with its poems that are sprinkled with indigenous wisdom and culture, and the rhythms and harmonies created with guitar, percussion, flute, and other instruments, shows the “foundation” of Brazilian music. Pedro Indio Negro joins on vocals for the opening track (1) “Temquitê”. He and Juliana Linhares share an impressive voice that seems to expose their souls to the world.
The cover of the protest song (3) “O Ronco da Cuíca,” composed by João Bosco with lyrics by Aldir Blanc, is one of the highlights of the album. This song has been in their repertoire since their inception, and their anger at those who oppress and exploit them is symbolized not only in the lyrics but also in the intense saxophone solo in the interlude.
(4) “Espanta Assombração” features Roberta Sá. It is a new samba in the Pietá style, created with a future-oriented approach based on the musical heritage of the past.
After (6) “Perfume de Araçá” featuring Jota.pê, the second half of the album turns calm and introspective. If the first half of the album is an emanation, the second half is a cool down, showing a deep respect for the traditional music of northeastern Brazil, as can be seen in the final part of (8) “Nasci no Brasil”.
